About the course

Welcome to my series, Art Academy!

My dedicated series to help growing artists improve and learn. This class is part 1 of 2 for Gesture Drawing. Here we’ll be covering the Basics to get you started on quick improvement and pushing your figures to be fluid and appealing. You can join this class at any level, growing to seasoned! This is a great way to build skill and warm up. The foundations of most art is drawing, so kick your progress into gear by efficiently building your visual portfolio. One of your most precious resources as an artist.

This class is very thorough, covering a lot of information as well as providing resources. I have a lot of tips and tricks to go along with these guidelines on gestures. I’ve learned my knowledge on the subject from personal experience, teachers, and from pros that I want to share. I have a lot more I would love to teach from my experience in 2D and 3D art! So I hope you enjoy my classes, I want to share as much as I can. I’m here to help you and build you up, because this is something my younger self would’ve loved to be apart of!

Our project will be doing a number of gesture drawings and a bonus project of refining your top picks. I offer critique and encouragement. Please don’t hesitate to join the class! Gesture drawing is a wonderful practice that helps loosen you up and help you understand the human figure better. Everyone is learning at their own pace. Please get comfy and take a seat with me, as I go over the Basics of gesture drawing and walk you through the process. I can’t wait to see your projects!

What can you learn from this course?

Class Project: Gesture Figures

This project will be a series of gestures. I would like 10-20 gestures done in whatever time format you’re practicing in. The shorter the better! 15-30 seconds is ideal. You’re free to submit work done traditionally, digitally, with whatever drawing tool you want. Don’t think about anatomy, push and exaggerate those poses, don’t use straight lines, try out some different gesture structures, and have fun!

Once you’ve done your gesture drawings, there’s also a bonus project of picking your top 3 gestures you did, and refining those figure forms. The goal is to create a fluid and appealing figure. Remember to use confident and curved lines.

Here are some online gesture sites you can use:

  • reference.sketchdaily.net
  • line-of-action.com
  • quickposes.com

You can also use magazines, pose collections elsewhere, library books, personal photos, whatever you have available!

When you’re done, please submit your project so I can see your amazing work and your peers will be able to build you up and be encouraged to join you. :)
