About the course

This class is #12 in a series called the Ultimate Excel Course.

In this class you will learn how to use the magic of Power Query in Excel. Power Query has changed the way that we import, shape and load data into Excel. And if you are not familiar with it, you want to get up to speed FAST.

It was introduced with the 2010 version of Excel as an add-in. In Excel 2016 it became part of the Excel, so no add-ins required. So if you have 2016 great. If not just quickly Google and install the add-in. Takes 30 seconds.

This class will really show you the incredible power of this feature and why I think it must be learnt by all Excel users. It seriously is a game-changer. And this course really just skims the surface of its capabilities, but will really open your eyes.

During the class we will use it to import data from the web, text files, from a folder in a directory and even combine multiple worksheets into 1 with the click of a button.

Power Query makes importing, cleaning and transforming data as easy as any other skill in Excel. You won’t need intense formulas (although they can be done also).

The Excel files used during the class are provided so that you can follow along. You can then take on the project exercise to test your skills in action.

Please post any questions in the discussion area and I will get back to you.

Grab a coffee, enrol and let’s do this.

What can you learn from this course?

In this project can you perform the following steps.

  1. Open a blank new workbook.

  2. Import the exercise-data.txt file provided in this section of the downloadable files.

  3. This file is tab-delimited. Check that Power Query has detected this (change if necessary) and Edit the file in the Editor.

  4. Change the Name of the query to Transactions.

  5. Remove the Changed Type step.

  6. Check the Date column is in the right format. There may be locale issues if your regional settings are not set to the dd/mm/yyyy format. Change the locale now if you need to.

  7. Unpivot the Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham and York columns.

  8. Separate the Source column at the hyphen (-) so that the ID and name are in separate columns.

  9. Format the first column (Source.1) as Text and the last column (Value) as Currency (if you are prompted to either replace the current step or add a new one – choose to Replace Current Step)

  10. Rename the first column as ID, the second column as Rep and the Attribute column as City.

  11. Re-order the Date column to the left of the Rep column.

  12. Rename the Split Column by Delimiter applied step to Split ID and Rep.

  13. Close and Load the query into a table on the existing worksheet.

IT Trainer, Coffee Lover and Lifelong learner
Hello, my name is Alan Murray and I have been training and consulting in Excel now for over 20 years. I have had the pleasure in helping individuals and businesses from all around the world improve their Excel skills.

I set up Computergaga about 10 years ago to help spread the latest Excel tips and to engage with other Excel experts and learners. It has grown beyond my expectations and I hope to get the chance to speak with many of you soon.

I have a real passion for Excel and I hope that it comes across in my classes. I believe that it helps if you enjoy what you are learning.

I currently live in Ipswich, on the east coast of England. I have two beautiful children. So they take up most of my time away from Excel. If I’m not with them or Excel, I can probably be found running.
