About the course

Slow down and take your appreciation for nature a step further with this step-by-step watercolor painting course! In this beginner-friendly class, you’ll gain the tools you need to turn the inspiration you find outside into vibrant watercolor paintings.

Join natural history illustrator Rosalie Haizlett for a painting lesson in a little off-grid cabin on her family’s farm in the Appalachian mountains, where she spent her childhood.

In this course, you’ll learn how to:

  • Find the right materials (hint: you might already have them!)
  • Take a good reference photo outdoors
  • Create an accurate pencil sketch
  • Use watercolor layering techniques to bring your sketch to life
  • Add realistic textures
  • Paint a mushroom and fern!

So make yourself a cup of tea, gather some basic watercolor supplies, and get ready to learn some new skills in a fun and relaxing environment!

You can either paint from your own reference photo or use the two photos that Rosalie will be working from (which are downloadable under the “resources” tab).

What can you learn from this course?

Assignment:

Your project is to create a vibrant watercolor painting from a photo! Using either the two photos that are available in the “Resources” tab (featuring a mushroom and fernor your own simple nature photo, create a small watercolor painting using the techniques that we covered in this course.

Materials:

  • Cup full of water
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Paper towel or napkin
  • Watercolor paints (tube or pan paints will do the job!)
  • Watercolor brushes in a couple of different sizes
  • Watercolor paper (the cheap stuff works just fine)
  • Photo of a simple natural object like a leaf, flower, or mushroom (optional!)

Check out the Watercolor Materials Booklet that I added under the “Resources” tab for links to the exact supplies that I like to use!

Getting Started:

Watch the “Gathering Your Materials” video and set up your workspace with everything you need. Then, watch each video and follow along at your own pace. I’d recommend watching each video first, then practicing the skills that I introduced in that lesson.

Sharing Your Artwork:

I can’t wait to see what you create! Feel free to upload any of the following to the “Your Project” section.

  • Your color swatch palette from the Color Swatch Exercise video
  • Your works-in-progress from any phases of the project
  • Your final watercolor painting

If you share your art on social media, be sure to use the hashtag #naturewatercolorclass so we can all see what you’re working on! And please reach out to me if you have any questions or need extra guidance. :)
