Discover how artist and illustrator, Melissa Lee Shaw, combines realism and abstract textures to infuse her watercolor portraits with a sense of wonder and whimsy. In this 47-minute class, you’ll learn her step-by-step process for creating beautiful watercolor portraits, including various tips and tricks she’s picked up along the way, as well as her own personal philosophy on creativity and making art. 

All levels of skill are welcome, whether you’ve never used watercolors before or have been using them for years. 

By the end of the class, you will be ready to create your own colorful watercolor portrait, and hopefully be inspired to use the skills you learned for future watercolor projects.

 

What can you learn from this course?

Create a Colorful Watercolor Portrait

ASSIGNMENT

Your assignment is to sketch and paint a watercolor portrait, using the tips and techniques you learned in the videos.

DELIVERABLE

A completed project should include both your pencil sketch and completed painting. And of course, feel free to post as many process photos as you’d like!

MATERIALS

  • Artist Grade Watercolors (I use Cotman and Grumbacher brand tubes)
  • A Mini Brush for Detail Work (I use sizes 0 and 20/0, both Round)
  • Flat Wash, Size 1-1/2″ to 2″ Brush (optional)
  • Two or Three Round Brushes of Different Sizes (I use sizes 4, 6, and 10)
  • Brush Cleaner (optional)
  • Masking Fluid (optional)
  • A Cheap Brush or Color Shaper for Masking
  • 140lb or 300lb Watercolor Paper (I like using Canson Watercolor Blocks)
  • Masking Tape (optional)
  • Cling film, Rubbing Alcohol, and Salt for Texturing (optional)
  • Pencils (I use a .5mm mechanical pencil with HB, 4B, and Blue Lead)
  • Palette or Plate for Mixing Paints (I use a Butcher Tray Palette)
  • Two Water Containers (one for mixing with paints and one for cleaning your brushes)
