About the course

No matter what your academic or professional goals are, this course provides a storyline of the fundamental concepts related to business analytics and data science. By the end of this course, you will learn about:

  • Factors that pushed data science an AI into the mainstream
  • Why data science and analytics skills are critical in today’s marketplace
  • The pillars of data science: data, analytics and algorithms, and visualization
  • The Data Science Process and a case study
  • How companies build an infrastructure and a culture to become data and analytics driven
  • Data science careers

This course will be part of a series. We will approach it top-down covering the fundamental core concepts to this field, then drilling down and getting more technical in future courses.

To get started, you only need your notebook, a pen, a curious mind, and a cup of joe 🙂

What can you learn from this course?

Your assignment will be to research and write a brief report about a case study where analytics and data science techniques are applied. This can be in any industry you prefer (banking, medicine, media, retail, manufacturing).

At this point we are not trying to code or build models (that will come later); rather we want to conceptualize and think creatively about how to solve with data and analytics and put into practice the concepts we learned. Your final project output will be 3-4 slides that summarize:

  • The situation / problem statement
  • Example business questions we want to solve
  • A discussion on the datasets and analytics we need to answer those questions

Please be sure to source any external references you use and avoid posting any propriety or confidential information about your or other companies. I have included a sample for reference.

Have fun with this and please share your report :-)
