About the course

This beginner photography course will cover all the necessary equipment, skills, and techniques to achieve beautiful professional-looking self-portrait photos. Fancy or expensive camera equipment is not required, as this class is meant to emphasize that anyone with a creative mind and willingness to learn can achieve stunning photos with little resources.

Whether you want portraits for your blog, social media accounts, or simply to build your portfolio, self-portrait photography is a skill that I believe all creatives should learn. It’s challenging, but it will push you to think so far outside the box that you might begin to wonder if there even was a box in the first place.

This course will include lessons on:

  • Basic setup for self-portraits
  • How to use a remote or self-timer with your camera
  • Developing your artistic eye in order to utilize light in a creative way
  • Finding the best locations for your shoots
  • Helpful tips including how to pose and how to become more comfortable in front of the camera
  • Best practices for editing your final photos

Class Project: During the course, students will be asked to find a simple location within their own living spaces to get creative and practice the learned self-portrait techniques.

While this is a beginner course, it is recommended that students have some prior knowledge of camera settings, lighting, and portrait photography. The more you understand about lighting and composition, the quicker you will be able to create more unique self-portraits. Once again, students will not need expensive equipment for this course. While it will be taught using a DSLR for the examples, self-portraits can also be done on any cellphone with photo and self-timer capabilities.

What can you learn from this course?

Now that you’ve watched and understood this tutorial, you’re going to take your first self-portrait at home!

What You Will Need:

  • Location with a strong light source (near a window is preferable)
  • Camera (DSLR or Phone)
  • Remote or self-timer
  • Tripod (maybe)
  • Props
  • You!

Find a spot in your own home that would make for a great self-portrait spot. If you want to focus on headshots, all you need is simply a blank wall. If you’re looking for something more visually different, move some furniture around a bit! Let’s say you have a great window letting in beautiful soft light, but there’s only a houseplant sitting next to it. Bring over a funky chair or stool or even a textured backdrop! Don’t be afraid to create a cool little photo corner for this project.

Once you’ve found your location with a strong light source, set up your camera on a tripod or set it on some furniture. Set up the frame like you learned and get your self-timer or remote ready. Snap a few shots to get comfortable posing and try new things if you aren’t achieving the exact look you were hoping for.

Remember, don’t give up when you get frustrated. Just reset, rearrange, and restart.

Add that creative touch to your photos when you edit them and post it to the group! These photos can be black and white or color. I want to see your unique perspective and creativity in your photos. Since this will most likely be your first time taking self-portraits, don’t be too critical of yourself. Share your photos and ask for constructive feedback from your fellow students. If you really love the color, composition, light, or posing in another student’s portrait shot, tell them by leaving a comment! We’re here to learn and grow together. With each self-portrait shoot you do, you’ll get so much better!
